It's that time of year again: preparing for PAS! Below are a few updates before we see each other in San Francisco.

Maryellen, Sue and I have been crisscrossing the country to attend Regional Meetings. The enthusiasm and collaboration we observed, especially among junior and senior members as well as among institutions bodes well for the future of the APA!

Speaking of the future and beginning with your input through the "Value of the APA" survey last summer, the APA Board has been working over the past nine months to develop APA's 2017-2022 Strategic Plan. The plan in addition to a new mission, vision and core values is featured in this Newsletter. WE CHANGED OUR MISSION TO FOCUS ON YOUR SUCCESS!

Our New Mission:
The Academic Pediatric Association nurtures the academic success and career development of child health professionals engaged in research, advocacy, improvement science and educational scholarship to enhance the health and well-being of all children.

We have 4 GOALS with strategies that will advance our mission:

  1. Be the academic home for child health care professionals by being the premier source for career development
    • Formalize/organize an approach to academic professional development
    • Develop an online learning strategy
    • Strengthen and expand opportunities for mentoring and networking among members
    • Promote internal leadership and engagement opportunities

  2. Increase member diversity and engagement
    • Develop a staff-driven, robust communication strategy, tools and guiding principles to keep members informed and engaged

  3. Advance an equitable child health agenda
    • Focus advocacy efforts on socially and economically disadvantaged children
    • Elevate and apply an academic approach to translating how evidence informs policy
    • Collaborate and partner with the Pediatric Policy Council and other child health organizations to ensure APA's mission and vision are represented

  4. Build an effective infrastructure and secure the necessary staff, technology and financial resources to support our mission.
    • Explore new governance structures to separate strategy from operations
    • Define and delineate volunteer and staff roles for efficiency and effectiveness
    • Invest in staff and professional expertise to support and advance the efforts of the organization
    • Explore efficiencies in both technology and processes
    • Improve and enhance internal communications

Whether you can join us in San Francisco or not I would like to ask you to think about how you can help advance our mission and achieve our goals. At PAS I am going to ask each Region, SIG and Committee to determine and commit to 1-3 tactics that align with our goals to work on over the next year that will help contribute to our collaborative success. After PAS, we will share the committed tactics across the organization to encourage collaboration, engagement and accountability.

Speaking of engagement, you do not want to miss the APA Membership Meeting on Sunday, May 7 from 3:45 pm - 5:45 pm in the San Francisco Marriott Marquis! We will have a new "Speed Learning" event this year to facilitate enjoyable networking and collaboration with colleagues throughout our regions, SIGs, committees and core programs. I guarantee you will meet new colleagues, learn how the APA can support you, learn how you can get involved and have fun!

We will also be piloting a new format for the Presidential Plenary on Monday, May 8 from 1:30 pm -5:15 pm with audience participation, social media and music - to keep you engaged while learning about cutting edge research.
