Treasurer's Message

December 2009

Contributing to the APA Development Fund on our 50th Anniversary.

It is our Jubilee year, our 50th Anniversary. In 1960 the APA was known as the Association for Ambulatory Pediatric Services. Now we are the Academic Pediatric Association. While the name has changed the mission to excel in the delivery of care to children through clinical research, teaching and advocacy has not.

Over the past 50 years we have had many successes. These are demonstrated in the Association's Core Activities: Research Networks, Educational Scholars Program, New Century Scholars, Leadership Conference, Environmental Health Scholars, Young Investigator Awards, Academic General Pediatric Accreditation Program and more, tied to a clear strategic plan. We have remained a vibrant organization that appeals to an interdisciplinary group focused on improving the health status of children. That deserves a celebration.

The APA will celebrate its 50th anniversary at the annual meeting of the Pediatric Academic Societies in Vancouver, Canada May 1-4, 2010 with special programming and exciting speakers. We are making a special appeal to all who share our concern for the care of children and the education of pediatricians to make a special contribution this year to the APA Development Fund. The APA Development Fund was started 8 years ago in order to build capacity for the APA to fund the Young Investigator Awards and other projects essential to the fulfillment of our mission. Our portfolio seems to have whethered the storms of last year, but we need to continue to grow. The Board has collectively pledged $5,000 to the Fund, in honor of our Jubilee. We invite you all to do the same. Go to the website (www.academicpeds.org) and make you contribution now.

Thank you for your strong support. We look forward to seeing you in Vancouver. And remember, it really IS all about the children.
