Region I met in Amherst, MA this year on March 22nd. Our theme of the day was "Improving outcomes in child health and development". The day began with brief updates on two of the APA research networks, BORN and CORNET. We continued with four research abstracts from area residents and medical students, encompassing topics from population based cardiac screening, to medical organization preventive services guidelines for LGBT adolescents, to peer mentorship programs for medical students.

Dr. Paul Dworkin from the University of Connecticut delivered the keynote address of the day, leading the participants through the history of community-coordinated developmental screening and services in Connecticut. The "Help Me Grow" model developed there has now been adopted by 18 states across the U.S.

After lunch, we had a workshop on how to work with community-based organizations and parent groups about developmental screening and surveillance. Dr. David Keller, APA president-elect, gave the concluding talk of the day, updating the attendees on membership, strategic planning and program development from APA national.

We will meet next on Monday morning May 6th at the PAS meeting for breakfast.
