Once again Region IX and X joined each other at the annual Community, Advocacy, Research and Education (CARE) Conference in sunny, Monterey, CA. The meeting was held at the historic naval Post Graduate School with a near record turnout of faculty and presenters. During the two day conference, attendees had a chance to exchange ideas and support one another. This year's abstracts covered a wide range of topics that centered on child and adolescent health, children with special health care needs, and local, regional and international advocacy efforts. APA President, Dr. David Jaffe discussed the scope of APA activities, provided an interesting perspective on opportunities to get involved in the APA, and reiterated the broad support for our local regions. This year's keynote speaker was Dr. Carol Berkowitz who provided an inspiring talk on "One Path to Leadership: Latency, Serendipity, Volunteerism and Perseverance" highlighting her unique path to leadership and modeled the importance of getting involved. The second day of the conference was highlighted by two outstanding, informative workshops on motivational interviewing and the power of social media in medicine. Both workshops provided a well-rounded review and techniques to incorporate in clinical practice.

Winners of the Paul Young Travel Award to this year's PAS meeting in Washington, D.C. were Elizabeth Rogers from UCSF for her abstract "Creation of a youth-led diabetes prevention campaign through an academic-community partnership holds promise" and Emily Johnston from Stanford University for her abstract "Reproductive health of incarcerated girls outside of juvenile hall". The winners will present at our Regional Breakfast on Monday May 6th from 7-8am at the annual Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting.
