July 2017 Newsletter Article

Hello Region V!

Welcome to summer in the Midwest! We are happy to report we have had quite a successful first half of 2017.  We had a fantastic regional conference in Indianapolis on March 11/12.  We were honored to have such great speakers as Drs. James Lemons and Dr. Emily Walvoord from Indiana University, Dr. Deshpande from Peoria, and Dr. Siegel from Cincinnati, as well as Dr. Mary Ottolini who was present to give our APA update and give a fabulous leadership talk! Thank you to all of these amazing people!  In addition, we were able to have a robust variety of abstracts presented by students, residents and fellows from around our region, both on original science/QI, as well as case presentations.  This was a great opportunity for them to present their work! Thank you to all who encouraged their learners to submit.

We also are happy to report that we had a great Breakfast at PAS and were able to have our regional conference winners present their posters, and our first place winners were able to give Oral presentations.  Congratulations to all of those presenters! They hailed from Cleveland, Ann Arbor, Chicago, Beaumont, and others!  And thank you also to the abstract reviewers who helped make this possible!

We would like to take this opportunity to present to you our new Region V incoming co-chair, Dr. Stacey Chittle-Shubeck, from Beaumont Health System in Michigan.  Dr. Shubeck is a general pediatrician there and is Director of the Med-Peds Residency. We are excited to have her join us! She is excited to join our Region V leadership to help facilitate our mission to encourage young academic minds.  Welcome, Dr. Shubeck!

We also would be remiss without thanking our outgoing Co-chair, Dr. Jawad Javed from Children’s Hospital of Illinois in Peoria.  Thank you for your commitment to medical education and the leadership of our region.  We appreciate all you have done the past 3 years!

Upcoming items:

1. SAVE THE DATE: March 2, 2018 will be the next Region V APA conference. This year, the conference will be hosted by Loyola University and will be held in Chicago, IL.  We look forward to seeing you all there!  Look for upcoming announcements for Topics and speaker list.

2.  Institutional Reps:  The APA is looking for a way to engage more faculty in this great organization. We are looking to recruit a person from each institution in the region who would be the Institution representative for their region.  This would be someone who could be a resource for others at that site, and a liason to the co-chairs when needed. If you or someone you know would like to help in this role, please contact one of us. Thanks to those who have already volunteered!

3.  Conference Planning committee: We are looking for folks who are interested in helping plan next year’s conference.  We want to make the conference useful and desirable.  We would love a few engaged parties to help us plan via conference call, largely to help with speaker selection, abstract reviews and rankings, food planning, etc.  If you are interested please let us know!

3. ABSTRACT REVIEWERS: We are in need of people to review abstracts for our regional conference. We will need people to review case presentations as well as original science/quality improvement abstracts. Thank you to those who have already volunteered.  If you are interested, please let me know.  Commitment is for about 4-5 abstracts. They will be sent to you by Dec. 1st and will need to be scored by Dec. 15th.

As always, please let us know what we can do for you! Thank you for being an APA member.
