Overview - Arthur Fierman, MD
The APA continues to grow, with an operating budget of $1.2 million for 2007. On the expense side of the budget, approximately 40% of our expenses are attributable to membership, meeting and Journal and other publication costs. Another 30-40% of expenses are attributable to the pass-through spending that occurs on the grants administered by APA for the benefit of the membership and the organization, including programs such as CORNET, the educational scholars program, the environmental health fellowship, and New Century Scholars. While the activities of the APA continue to expand, administrative costs have remained at approximately 20% of our total expenses over the past three years. On the income side of the budget, aside from grants, the largest proportion of our income comes from member dues and from the PAS meeting. Our investment portfolio continues to grow. It is currently valued at $1.3 million, with a 14.8% annual rate of return on our investments from January 2006 to the present, and this year’s income from interest, dividends and increase in value totaling approximately $200,000. The total net income for our organization for 2006 was approximately $144,000.

APA Development Fund - Arthur Fierman, MD
The APA continues to grow. Our organization supports an ever-increasing number of activities, seeks to provide support to young investigators, and to sponsor the research and educational efforts of our members. Special Interest Groups (SIGs), regions and committees have extended their work beyond the annual meeting. The continued growth of our organization is certainly exciting! However, many APA programs have been limited by financial constraints. In response to this challenge, the APA Development Fund was established in 2003, with a goal of building an endowment that can provide a self-sustaining source of funds for many of the activities of the APA. Each year since its inception in 2003, there has been steady growth in the amount of money contributed by our membership, with total contributions of $27,406 in 2006. There has also been an increase each year in the percentage of members who contribute to the Fund – up from 19% in 2005 to 26% in 2006. Since the Fund was first established, a total of 95,718 has been raised. As of this writing, 100% of the membership of the Board of Directors has contributed to the Fund, 63% of Region Chairs, 42% of SIG chairs and 26% of our general membership have made contributions. Efforts will continue to increase member participation, and to identify other potential donors for this important APA effort.
