Spring 2008 Newsletter Article

Members of the Education Committee have been working on several projects and welcome your input at our Education Committee Meeting in Hawaii on Sunday May 4th from 11am-12:30 pm in the South Pacific Ballroom 1. Lindsey Lane and Rob McGregor will lead a workshop-like activity that will allow you to get actively involved.

One of the main goals of the Education Committee is to foster collaboration among pediatric educators working in different settings and with different levels of trainees. Thanks to the many APA, COMSEP and APPD members who completed a needs assessment designed to gauge interest in a tri-sponsored meeting solely devoted to promoting educational excellence in pediatrics. There was an overwhelming positive vote from the 464 who responded. We envision this “Pediatric Educational Excellence Across the Continuum Conference” (PEEAC) to be the first in a series of annual meetings to enable pediatric educators teaching different levels of learners (students, residents, fellows) and in different clinical settings including the ED, primary care in either academic or community based setting or inpatient or critical care unit to collaborate and learn from each other. We envision that this conference will offer tracks focusing on different topic areas/levels of teaching experience and the opportunity to collaboratively plan pilot projects to introduce new curricula to improve education across the pediatric continuum. Planning timeline for the PEEAC conference: Fall 2009.

In addition we also have been working with COMSEP and APPD members to plan an “Education Summit” to determine how we can best enhance educational experiences and develop more uniform learning objectives, competencies and evaluation strategies for fourth year students focusing on a career in pediatrics. Please respond to a survey that we will circulate to determine what you perceive to be gaps in current 4th year medical student education.

The APA Education Committee sponsored a meeting for Pediatric Hospitalist Fellowship Directors in Washington DC on January 27th to define a uniform curriculum and standards for training fellows in Pediatric Hospitalist Medicine. Fellowship Directors from seven institutions across the US and Canada attended. The “Academic Goals and Suggested Objectives for General Pediatrics Fellows: A Resource for Fellowship Programs” from the APA Academic General Pediatric Fellowship Accreditation Project is being used as a blue print to guide the project. A model curriculum will be generated by the fellowship directors and made available on the Education Committee webpage of the APA website after the PAS meeting this spring.

Please contact me if you have any agenda ideas for the Education Committee meeting in Hawaii or thoughts in general about how the Education Committee could better serve you as an educator.
