EDUCATION COMMITTEE LEADERSHIP
Chair
Fall 2006 Newsletter Article
We have been working very hard on continuing development of the ESP. The first cohort includes 30 scholars from institutions across the country: 23 general pediatricians, 1 med-peds physician and 8 subspecialists in pediatric emergency medicine, neonatology, critical care, and infectious diseases. We have received a grant from the Dyson Foundation-AAP Community Pediatrics Training Initiative to add in 2007 a new cohort of 10 scholars who have a special interest in education and community pediatrics. This group will be led by David Keller and Alice Kuo, and applications are due on November 22, 2006. Eventually, we hope to add 10 new scholars every year.
Since our inaugural ESP teaching session at the PAS meeting in May, we have provided our Scholars with two reading and Q/A assignments. Each Scholar has a project facilitator from our faculty, as well as a mentor at home to assist them with their scholarly projects. We have created templates for the Scholars to use to create educator portfolios and project reports, and we have developed an ambitious plan for evaluation of our program and a set of research projects that relate to it. Projects under consideration deal with ways to match ESP scholars’ needs with an appropriate curriculum, the value of educator portfolios in academic planning and advancement, and the effect of mentoring on experiential learning.
The Educational Guidelines team is planning a collaborative workshop on innovative adaptations of the Guidelines for PAS 2007. Over a dozen programs have submitted proposals.
In March 2007, the APA will host a leadership conference for current and potential leaders in academic general pediatrics, with keynote talks on the status of academic general pediatrics and workshops on topics such as strategic planning, finance, managing conflict, research, education, and mentoring. Many national leaders will serve on the conference faculty.
The Education Committee decided to sponsor both beginning and advanced workshops on educational scholarship for PAS 2007. A workshop aimed at junior faculty and fellows called “Produce or Perish: A Roadmap to Scholarly Success” was submitted by Maryellen Gusic and Mimi Bar-on. Fred McCurdy led the submission of a workshop for mid-level faculty called “Fanning the Flame of Educational Scholarship When It Flickers.” We hope both workshops will be on the PAS program for the edification and motivation of the many educators among us!
Membership in the Education Committee is open to all members of the APA. If you are interested in joining, contact Committee Chair, Connie Baldwin at: constance_baldwin@urmc.rochester.edu

APA Faculty Development Program
The mission of the APA Faculty Development Program is to assist the membership in developing themselves as productive, advancing and fulfilled faculty members and to increase the quality, status and visibility of pediatric educators in academia. The program operates the Educational Scholars Program and E-Connections.
APA Teaching Award
The purpose of this award is to foster interest in the teaching of ambulatory pediatrics by giving national recognition to an outstanding ambulatory pediatric program. Programs must demonstrate excellence in educational teaching methods, acceptance by students and/or residents, acceptance by the community and the institution innovations and adaptability, or outstanding quality of the individuals trained in the program. Emphasis is placed on the award being given to an outstanding program.

APA Miller-Sarkin Mentoring Award
This award recognizes the contributions of an APA member who has provided outstanding mentorship both locally and nationally. The award was established to honor the careers of Steve Miller and Rich Sarkin, two very active APA members who died in a tragic accident last year. Steve and Rich helped change the face of medical education by bringing humanistic, learner-centered principles and methods to teaching in both classroom and clinical settings. Individually and together, they enriched the careers and lives of many younger colleagues through their mentoring. The recipient of the Miller-Sarkin Mentoring Award will be an individual who is recognized as a role model for others as a teacher, clinician, and/or researcher, as well as a model for colleagues who mentor others.
2005 Awardees:

Columbia University, NY, NY
Richard T. Sarkin, M.D.
State University of New York at Buffalo
Community Teaching Award
This award is designed to highlight the career of a community pediatrician who has dedicated his/her career to the teaching of medical students and residents. This award is co-sponsored by the APA SIG for Community-Based Physicians and the AAP Resident Education and Training SIG, and funded by Mead Johnson.

Ray E. Helfer Award For Innovation In Pediatric Education
Ray E. Helfer was an esteemed pediatric educator, child advocate and past President of the Ambulatory Pediatric Association. The purpose of the Helfer award is to recognize a creative, innovative educator(s) who submits an outstanding paper in pediatric education for presentation at the annual PAS meeting. Unlike the APA Teaching Award, this award is not intended to recognize a group of individuals who have developed a comprehensive curriculum. Abstracts submitted for presentations at the PAS meeting are rated by members of the Education Committee to choose the recipient. A plaque and stipend will be presented following a brief announcement at the APA Award Ceremony. The Ray E. Helfer Foundation for Children and Families provides financial support for this award.
