Pediatric Research in Inpatient Settings (PRIS) Network
Over the past several years, momentum to develop a PRIS network to collaboratively study key questions in inpatient pediatrics has steadily mounted. In 2002, 25 health care centers had expressed preliminary interest in participating in PRIS. In 2007, we now have over 200 hospitalists from 80 centers participating in the network, representing centers from the United States and Canada.
PRIS is an independent entity founded through a collaborative effort of three organizations: the Society for Hospital Medicine, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Academic Pediatric Association. Core network management support has been generously provided by the Academic Pediatric Association. The mission of PRIS is to improve the care of hospitalized children by developing the evidence base for inpatient pediatric care. This will be done so by conducting larger, multi-institutional studies of inpatient pediatric care inadequately addressed to date through smaller studies and/or single site studies.
Project proposals may be submitted by any member of PRIS. Projects are reviewed by the steering committee and the network as a whole, and those selected for study move forward. Hospitalist groups participating in PRIS are free to participate or not in each project; practices that agree to participate are expected to collect data routinely on the question being studied. Those investigators who propose accepted projects become the principal investigator for the study, and are principally responsible for design, data gathering, and analysis. PRIS will provide a mechanism by which to conduct the studies, and can provide some assistance with study design, revision, administration, and analysis. The input of all hospitalists participating in PRIS studies is sought at every stage.
The members of the steering committee are as follows:
Christopher Landrigan, MD, MPH (PRIS chair)
Dan Rauch, MD
David Zipes, MD
Erin Stucky, MD
Jack Percelay, MD
Laura Mirkinson, MD
Mary Ottolini, MD, MPH
We welcome the submission of additional proposals. If you are interested in being a part of this network, or have a research proposal, please email Chris Landrigan at christopher.landrigan@childrens.harvard.edu and Nui Dhepyasuwan at nui@academicpeds.org
PRIS Study on Epidemiology of Pediatric Hospital Medicine
The Pediatric Research in Inpatient Settings Network (PRIS) is conducting a study on the epidemiology of pediatric hospital medicine practice. The first step in this study consists of retrospective analysis of patient encounters for fiscal or calendar year 2006 by primary diagnosis.
All programs are welcome to participate regardless of formal PRIS membership status. For more information please contact Jack Percelay at JPercelayMD@yahoo.com or Nui Dhepyasuwan at nui@academicpeds.org
