The Environmental Health SIG had a well-attended, highly productive session at the PAS Meetings in Baltimore in May. The continued annual increases in attendance at these meetings reflects the growing prominence of Pediatric Environmental Health as an important area for persons involved in General and Academic Pediatrics.

Dr. Bruce Lanphear, presented our annual informational/educational update on Lead Toxicity in the United States, with particular emphasis on the growing concern regarding lead levels which have been previously considered of little clinical concern.

We next had a lengthy presentation and discussion of the new Pediatric Environmental Health Units (PEHSU's) which are now fully in place in all 10 regions in the U.S. as well as Canada and Mexico. Dr.s Jerome Paulson and Jay Mayefsky described both the PEHSU concept and clinical examples of their impact regarding clinical care and education through case presentation

The final area of discussion focused on a Train the Trainers Manual initially developed and revised by the Children's Environmental Health Network which was intended to further faculty development in teaching the subject of Pediatric Environmental Health. It became clear, through discussion, that the SIG had the potential to work with CEHN and update this manual - one which would complement the American Academy of Pediatrics Manual on Environmental Health. The group agreed that this would be an excellent idea to take on as a SIG goal for the upcoming year.
