Qualitative Research SIG
Jan Hanson, Colorado - outgoing SIG co-chair
Eve Colson, Yale
Terry Kind, Children’s National / GW
Linda Tewksbury, NYU, incoming SIG co-chair
The purpose of the qualitative research SIG is to bring people from all levels of experience and from different disciplines together learn how to make effective use of qualitative research methods.
Current SIG goals:
- To build skills in qualitative research methods among SIG members
- To bring together researchers and educators from different disciplines to learn about and build expertise in qualitative research methods.
- To build a cadre of qualitative researchers who can serve as a resource to the Academic Pediatrics Association and as mentors to APA members.
We wholeheartedly thank Jan Hanson for her many years of service to the SIG as she has been instrumental in our mission and meeting the above goals, and we are pleased to welcome Linda Tewksbury as new co-chair.
At the annual PAS meeting in Baltimore in May 2016 we held a productive SIG starting with a brief business meeting, in depth introductions and sharing of qualitative research interests, then 2 participants shared their qualitative projects (presented as posters at PAS) for further discussion of methodology questions and help with next steps. We then held small group consultation on participants’ individual projects.
The SIG was interested in periodic (quarterly) conference calls for skill building and discussion of projects and progress.
Other groups that work in your area of interest: (i.e. for med student education, this might include COMSEP, etc.) This methodology spans many groups, is certainly applicable to COMSEP, APPD, and others. We plan to join the Medical Student Interest Group next year (at PAS 2017) for a joint QR/Medical Student Education SIG meeting.
We are pleased to announce a joint meeting of the Qualitative Research SIG and the Medical Student Education SIG at PAS, to bring together researchers and educators with a focus on medical student education related research questions. This combined SIG will be on Sat May 6, 2017 at 8:30am in the Sierra Suite H at the Marriott Marquis in San Francisco. Practical examples from the medical student education literature that employ qualitative research methods will be used to provide background. Participants are welcome to bring their ideas and works in progress for work in facilitated small groups to share areas that participants are pondering or struggling with as well as possible ways to address the struggles. We offer skill building stations for participants to gain experience: 1) developing research questions pertaining to key topics in medical student education that can be answered through qualitative research methods, and 2) hands-on experience in analysis (introduction to coding).
