SIG Description


E-Learning is defined as any type of learning that is enabled or delivered to learners by Internets and Intranets or other types of computer networks. In recent years e-Learning environments have begun to incorporate web technology platforms to provide a simple and time flexible instructional delivery mode. The transition to online distance learning is creating a paradigm shift in the way health care professionals deliver instruction. Training is needed for the development of computer-based, alternative methods of course delivery and communication in medical education. The goal of the SIG for e-Learning in Medical Education is to help and encourage healthcare professionals to adopt new instructional delivery modes, to supplement or replace more traditional educational formats, and to identify teaching strategies that are time effective for their busy schedules. The SIG will also assist physicians and other healthcare professionals to select the best online teaching techniques, redesign their content and curriculum, incorporate self-directed, student-centered learning, and more effectively use computers to meet their learning objectives.


Mission and Vision


The SIG for e-Learning in Medical Education is a forum for medical educators with an interest in the use of e-Learning to support teaching and learning. With support from the Academic Pediatric Association (APA) this SIG is an opportunity for APA members to network, share ideas, resources, and experiences in the development and use of e-Learning in medical education. The SIG will enable members to keep up to date with national e-Learning initiatives and potential funding opportunities as well as provide support for help and advice to effectively design, develop, teach and evaluate online courses. Annual meetings will take place at the PAS annual conference, and on-demand meetings will be conducted online using available technologies.


Objectives


Objectives of the SIG for e-Learning in Medical Education are to:

  • Provide expertise and training to medical educators to effectively design, develop, teach and evaluate online courses, as well as to convert existing teaching materials into a format appropriate for e-Learning.
  • Educate APA members/healthcare professionals transition from traditional methodologies to student-centered, interactive online learning through conference workshops and meetings.
  • Encourage healthcare professionals to take advantage of the benefits of a digital world.
  • Establish a sustainable and expanding e-Learning network of medical educators to share knowledge and experience and showcase innovative practice and development.
  • Share latest developments, e-Learning technologies and ideas on the e-Learning SIG listserv.
  • Participate in educational activities to establish a common baseline understanding of e-Learning technologies and applications.
  • Establish best practice standards for the development of new online learning modules and encourage research to examine the effectiveness of e-Learning.
  • Keep abreast of current online programs and review national and international developments in e-learning.

The clocks have been set forward, it is officially spring and our PAS meeting is fast approaching. We are excited about our fourth annual e-Learning SIG meeting. This will be a highly interactive meeting environment that will feature a variety of speakers and topics whose message content offers enrichment opportunities across all spectrums of the e-Learning field. 12:20-12:40 pmTitle: Online Schools and Children With Special Health and Educational Needs: Comparison With Performance in Traditional Schools (Presenters: Erik Black; Lindsay Thompson)
Description: As K-12 virtual schooling continues to become more prevalent, it is incumbent upon healthcare professionals, parents and children to better understand its impact on students that fall outside of the norm. Students with health care needs are one population that is particularly underrepresented in the literature. In an effort to rectify this, researchers conducted two separate studies which employed a valid and reliable screening instrument to identify and describe children with special health care needs who were enrolled in state-led K-12 virtual schools in four southeastern US states. This presentation describes the results of these surveys and discusses the implications of these results for health care professionals, parents and children.
12:40-1:05 pmTitle: E-Learning with Moodle
(Presenter: Grant P. Christman)
Description: Moodle is an open source Virtual Learning Environment that is fast becoming one of the most popular software platforms for e-Learning education. Though frequently used by major universities to host formal online courses, Moodle is equally well-adapted for use in more intimate, face-to-face learning environments such as those encountered in the hospital-based education of pediatric residents and medical students. In this presentation, we will discuss how to set up a Moodle website, how to develop a learning module with Moodle, and how to turn a Moodle site into a collaborative academic community for faculty, residents, and medical students.
1:05-1:30 pm Title: 7+2 Easy Steps to Better PowerPoint Presentations: Turning Educational Theory into Practice (Presenter: Bernhard L. Wiedermann)
Description: Although many education research studies have shown poor learning outcomes when speakers recite verbatim from bullet-point slides, this practice continues to be common in medical education. Barriers to change are significant, particularly when clinical commitments leave little time to re-invent faculty members' approach to PowerPoint use. Rather than suggesting a wholesale (and time-consuming) reboot of everything PowerPoint, this presentation will focus on a few key changes that faculty, fellows, and residents can implement gradually without an inordinate time commitment. Focus points include a brief discussion of cognitive load theory, followed by quick ideas for modifying slide titles, legibility, and pictures, as well as novel approaches to speakers' notes and handouts.

Title: Implementing On-Line Curricula: Why Or Why Not And How To Get Started (Presenters: Dale A. Coddington, Nazreen Jamal, Todd P Chang, David Mathison, Terry Kind, Dewesh Agrawal, Mohsen Saidinejad, Pavan Zaveri)
Description: Online and mobile devices have augmented and changed the methods by which we teach and assess trainees in pediatrics. As medical educators, we need to decide when to use e-learning, how to do it well, and how to evaluate its effectiveness. This will provide a primer on electronic modalities including blogs and wikis, webinars, podcasting and mobile, audio, and video applications. The focus of this workshop will be on exploring specific on-line teaching strategies and how they can be incorporated into a curriculum. In facilitated small groups, participants will apply principles of curriculum design to develop a plan for incorporating an on-line teaching strategy at their institution. Workshop participants will leave with a checklist for on-line curriculum development, learning resources about e-learning, and an action plan.

Webinar Cast Light on Online Professional Learning Communities
Dr. Kris Frady, Associate Director, Center for Workforce Development at Clemson University led a webinar on Monday, February 18 on the topic of online professional learning communities.
Dr. Frady shared various resources and discussed her research on online professional learning communities. She also introduced the emerging concept and described practices associated with successful learning communities.

Workshop on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at 8:30-11:30am: Kadriye O. Lewis, and her collaborators (John D. Mahan; Teri L. Turner, Med; Larry Hurtubise) will be presenting the workshop titled, "Leveraging E-Learning 2.0: Encourage Your Trainees to develop Life Long Learning Skills" (Course# 1216; Room# 144C, Washington Convention Center). This workshop will provide a guided tour of key concepts and tools that will take medical educators to the next level and provide insights into the variety of e-learning contexts. The workshop will present a variety of practical applications such as interactive web based learning sites (virtual simulations, mashups, and self-paced modules) and collaborative social learning sites such as Twitter, wikis, blogs/microblogs, and voice threads.

Workshop on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at 8:30-11:30am: Kadriye O. Lewis and Michal Cidon, will be presenting the workshop titled The ABCs of Wikis: Building Your Own Wiki for settings, make text entries, set up a learning activity, import photos, video, gadgets or widgets, and link to Internet resources as well as to invite collaborators and medical learners to visit their Wiki on PBWorks.
