Health Literacy SIG
Past Meeting Materials
We are looking forward to seeing Health Literacy SIG members at the upcoming 2015 PAS meeting in San Diego! We would like to highlight a few events at PAS for our members:
The Health Literacy SIG meeting will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2:45-4:45 PM (Hilton Bayfront Hotel - Sapphire 410A). We will have a special guest speaker, Ivor Horn, MD, MPH, and Medical Director for the Center for Diversity and Health Equity at Seattle Children's Hospital, who is an NIH-funded investigator focused on health communication and child health disparities. She will be sharing her work on social media and mobile health (mHealth) technology how they can be used to address health disparities. Participants at the SIG meeting will also have an opportunity to get feedback on their current and planned health literacy projects (in research, education and policy realms) and network with others interested in health literacy issues.
There will be two APA Health Literacy SIG-sponsored workshops at PAS:
Sunday, April 25, from 12:00-3:00 PM - "Health Literacy from ‘Bench' to Bedside: Verbal, Written, and Technological Tools for Clear Communication in Clinical Practice and Research" [Hilton Bayfront Hotel ~ Aqua 310B] and,
Monday, April 26, from 8:30-11:30 AM - "Doctors are from Mars, Patients are from Venus: Teaching Health Literacy Strategies Across the Medication Education Continuum to Close the Communication Gap and Keep Patients Safe and Well" [Hilton Bayfront Hotel ~ Aqua 310B].
We also wanted to announce that our HL SIG was selected to receive a APA SIG Small Grant HPV Vaccination Award for the proposed project "A Health Literacy Initiative to Improve Provider-Parent HPV Vaccine Communication" (Co-PI's: Rosy Chaabra, PsyD, H. Shonna Yin, MD, MS; co-I's Barbara Bayldon, MD, Iman Sharif, MD, MPH, MS, Deena Chisolm, PhD, Maheen Quadri-Sheriff, MD, MS). The grant will fund a multi-step educational initiative which will include: (1) performing a HL-informed evaluation of existing HPV counseling tools (e.g. grade level, suitability assessment), (2) identifying parent/provider barriers to HPV vaccination; (3) developing HL-informed educational materials in partnership with families and providers; and (4) evaluating the clarity of the HL-informed tools and provider and family acceptability. We welcome the participation of other APA SIG members - please contact the SIG chairs if you are interested in becoming involved!
